Echo's Curse

A weekly creative writing challenge. Continue the great openings of public-domain literature.

How it works

Every Monday a new opening is chosen from a classic of public-domain literature — Dracula, Frankenstein, Moby-Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and others. Members of the community read it and write their own continuation in 50 to 300 words. To submit a continuation, a writer must first read and vote on three other anonymous continuations — a blind cross-evaluation that protects the contest from popularity bias. On Sunday, the most-voted continuation is chosen and the next book is announced.

Why this exists

Most writing-prompt communities reward popularity. This one rewards craft. Submissions are anonymized during voting. Authors must read before they write. The result is a small, honest workshop where great openings get the responses they deserve.
